Okay, so obviously there's 2 answers here for the solo miner:
1) Wait for them to respawn (which takes forever).
2) Jump to a different system.
So I started system jumping to the surrounding systems.
Turns out they are suffering from the same thing: massive minning being performed by Corps. Their belts were either completely wiped out, or very, very little left over.
I've just spent 2 days jumping from system to system, and seeing th same result.
Really now, this makes it VERY hard for us noobs starting out who want to mine to build up some ISK. Nothing worse than jumping to a system, seeing a nice long list of Astroid Belts, only to find at every damn one of them nothing but those stupid jet cans floating around!
I was really starting to enjoy myself, but now instead I find that I'm increasingly annoyed and frustrated to be spending what few hours I have to play each day instead of mining, I'm system jumping trying to find some scraps that might be left over from these greedy people.
Has anyone thought about the fact that it might be better to get more astroid fields put in, or respawn them quicker? Seriously, these star systems could use an overhaul and have not only more astroid belts, but also add Kuiper Belts and Ort Clouds in the outer regions.
It is wrong to call people greedy when they are doing the same thing you want to do, only have been doing it much longer so they can afford to get the mining barges/exhumers which take less time to get what everyone NEEDS to build ships and mods in the game.
It is simple really. Use your map in-game, the ombrey's maps or other maps purchasable to find systems where there are fields to mine. Use the game map to find systems that are low population systems. They are there. Use your mind, use your eyes, observe the map over several days, etc.
